1. (Obverse and Reverse) 5-Peso banknote from Cuba under the rule of Fulgencio Batista. Born in the coastal town of Banes in 1901, Batista grew up in a country that had rid itself of Spanish rule following the Spanish-American War only years before. Though independent from American rule since 1902, the Republic of Cuba existed largely as a sort of client state of the nearby United States; a situation common in Latin America during the 20th Century. This stage of Cuban history was marked by political instability; a coup in 1933 known as the Sergeants' Revolt brought the young Sergeant Fulgencio Batista into the national spotlight, as he would become one of the five leaders that would jointly rule the country until the end of the year. Batista subsequently gained control through puppet presidents appointed afterwards, taking the presidency itself in 1940. After leaving office in 1944, Batista moved to Florida but returned to power in 1952 through a military coup. Although the 1940s and 1950s saw great foreign investment and infrastructural development in Cuba, the disparity of wealth widened further. During his second term, Batista faced an insurgency led by a young lawyer-turned-revolutionary Fidel Castro. The latter gained support by a population disenchanted by Batista's authoritarian rule and seeming subservience to American interests; the country had even become a lucrative center for American organized crime. On New Year's Day 1959, after a humiliating loss against Castro's insurgents at the Battle of Santa Clara and after more than 5 years of sporadic insurgency, Batista resigned as President and fled to exile in Spain. Castro subsequently seized power and would rule for decades and into the 21st Century. Series 1958.

Ever since I first saw a picture of this beach in St Maarten and aircraft landing just a couple of feet above people on the beach, I always wanted to land there and see it for myself. Was pretty amazing to finally see it and tick it off the ever growing list of places to visit!
Managed to get this shot while swimming in the sea!! Was abit risky but worth the shot, I think. Now it’s back to London and almost home time ready to get in the festive spirit. Firstly, let’s go from 30c to winter in 8 hours...😳
