Mud and Memorials is a Heritage Lottery Funded #creativeeducation project commemorating the end of the #FirstWorldWar . Devised by Back to the Front historian Roger Yapp and Artist Jo Atherton, pupils from #AbbotsLangley primary schools in #Hertfordshire have been busy creating a new #warmemorial for their village, working with clay to turn #memories of #Somme#mud into stone.
The #clay workshop enabled students to work with a material directly related to the conditions suffered by soldiers during the War. With many of the Abbots Langley soldiers perishing at #Passchendaele , the sensory experience of working with clay led to many thought-provoking discussions around the atrocious conditions suffered by many in #TheSomme .
Every child was allocated a fallen #soldier who had been researched by local historian Roger Yapp, whose tireless investigation made it possible to match up soldiers who once lived on the same streets as many of the schoolchildren. Each child produced a tile, bearing the name of their soldier which they decorated with common objects typically found in trench #archaeology .
"With every student producing unique work, it is hoped that this will be a reflection of the many, many individual stories of those who perished" explains artist, Jo Atherton.
"I personally feel that working in clay is a particularly evocative medium, and extremely pertinent for pupils learning about WWI in this important centenary year. This project and the legacy of the new memorial will hopefully contribute to the community’s collective memory of their soldiers and we are most thankful to #Bedford Modern School for firing the tiles; turning mud to stone for this very poignant project." .
