We got to stop by Balmorhea state park on our way to El Paso today. Pics are of the Commanche Springs Pupfish (endangered and endemic to this system), Blotched water snake, and then just some scenery. Definitely a check off of my bucket list, but I still want to come back and swim in the spring-fed pool. 🤞

Hey, friends! We need your help! The majestic Balmorhea Pool in West Texas is indefinitely closed due to structural damage and neglect. If you’ve swum in these beautiful waters, you know what a treasure it is. Balmorhea has long attracted people, including Native Americans, Spanish Explorers and U.S. soldiers. We need to step up and protect Balmorhea for generations to come. Garrison Brothers Distillery has partnered with Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation to raise money for rebuilding and restoring the park and pool by hosting a series of progressive pool parties, beginning with The Sonesta in Austin, June 23 and The Gage Hotel in Marathon, June 29-30. Rambler and Big Bend Brewing are proudly joining in support. Guests attending Balmorhea Blue swim parties will enjoy a fun-filled afternoon in and around the pool with live music and cocktails. All while raising money for the ongoing reconstruction, preservation and beautification of Balmorhea State Park. Please click the link in our profile to buy tix! Please join us! More dates and cities to follow.

We are out at Balmorhea this week conducting our quarterly fish sampling and found this cool cicada on a buttonbush on the edge of one of the cienegas. Can anyone help us out with an ID? #westtexas#balmorhea#balmorheastatepark
Yes, I took a video of the news! This is VERY PROMISING! Sound on to hear the report- but basically, they are hoping to repair the pool in the next few months (which I take to mean: 6-12 months! Let’s be real) So I guess summer 2019 will be when I can fully take advantage of living so close to Balmorhea... I hope they can manage to keep the high dive because that’s the highlight of all my visits!
Balmorhea State Park boasts the
world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool.
Built in the 1930s, more than 15 million gallons of crystal-clear water flow through the pool each day, gushing from the San Solomon Springs. The pool is up to 25 feet deep, covers 1.3 acres, and holds 3.5 million gallons of water that stays about 75 degrees year-round. One of the best swimming holes in the world and another hidden Texas gem.
🎶 I’m singin’ in the rain, just singin’ in the rain 🎶
Red-winged Black are common across most all of North America. Found in marshes and other wetland areas during the breeding season, males spend most of their time singing loudly and defending their territories. This particular male was taking an early morning bath under a sprinkler.
On our way to Big Bend we stopped at Balmorhea State Park and swam in spring fed the pool, which we had to ourselves that morning. The San Solomon Spring fed pool was built by the CCC in the 1930s. Before the pool was built the spring emptied into a natural cienega, or desert wetland. Now, two man-made cienegas support and abundance of wildlife including birds and even two species of endangered, native fish. Shortly after our visit, the pool underwent its annual cleaning. During the cleaning, workers found structural damage to the concrete walls under the diving board. The pool is now closed indefinitely while officials assess the damage and determine if it can be repaired. If you’ve ever been to Balmorhea, if you’ve ever wanted to go, or you just like the idea of swimming in the largest spring fed pool in the world and helping to protect wildlife, please consider donating to the cause. Maybe the best way to do this is to attend one of Garrison Brothers Distillery’s Balmorhea Blue events. Check out www.garrisonbros.com/balmorhea-blue for more information. (Note: I am not affiliated with the state park or the distillery, I just like Texas and bourbon, a lot 🐂🥃🏊♂️.)

If you haven’t heard, the pool at our our nearby sister park @balmorheastatepark is unfortunately closed until further notice due to critical structural repairs. 😥
But while you can’t soak in Balmorhea’s pristine spring fed waters, you CAN soak up the sunshine and mile high views at our park just 33 miles away. Just take a seat right here. 😎
🗣👋 hey y'all. In about four weeks we're heading back to Colorado from Austin. We take a particular scenic slower route that we've done on a few occasions now and we look forward to it every time. We'd love to share the experience of the gems that lie on this stretch of road with some friendly folk. If you feel like coming to any stop or region, let us know. All lifestyles welcome! Let's get rich in conversation and memories!
Here is the itinerary:
June 4 /// Garner State Park TX - paddleboarding/swimming/rope-swinging on a calm pristine section of the Frio River and hiking up Old Baldy for 360 views during the juiciest sunset #garnerstatepark
June 5 /// Balmorhea State Park TX - diving in the worlds largest artesian spring-fed pool w/ Caribbean-esque deep clear waters and swimming with rare species of wildlife in the middle of a remote desert area #balmorheastatepark
June 6 /// White Sands National Monument NM - bare feet pleasure in a bright smooth magical landscape that surrounds you for miles. #whitesandsnationalmonument
June 7 /// Cebolla Mesa NM - this day mainly serves to break up our trip into shorter drives. There is still amazing scenery and things to do, but it isn't quite a highlight. We'd likely stop in Santa Fe or Taos on the way to our dispersed camping down a dirt road on the edge of a canyon, maybe have an epic bonfire at night.
June 8 /// Vallecito Lake CO - The San Juan Mountains just outside of Durango. Large peaceful body of water. Pine trees. Camping on the shore. Need I say more? #vallecitolake#camping#roadtrip#summer2018#epic#swimming#hiking#stargazing#themountainsarecalling#joinus
