For years, I battled #IBD Irritable Bowel Disease (not the same as IBS) and that continuous conflict led me down a path littered with Prednisone. My poor body ingested oral chemo, my veins bled and collapsed from #remicaide . My thighs were black, blue, and bruised from the short #humaria duration that made me lethargic, sluggish, and half dead. But, the prednisone. The prednisone is what almost broke me. Months, and months, and months of high dose prednisone. At first, IV doses to get me pumped up then, almost a full year of oral until I went to my #gastro and said, "You taper me off or I won't make it to the end of the year." I was angry. Tired. Bloated. My skin thinned. My hair fell out. The insomnia lasted days and days. My eyebrow fell out. My dark circles where so black and thick, people though I was a shrunken Robert Smith.
Today, I did round #1 of lung function testing for athletes. For my fitness level, my asthma is blocking my ability to progress. Half because I have asthma, the other half because I've had over 15 intubations since 2012. 7 from surgeries, the others from colonoscopies.
I am on a 60mg prednisone taper for the next 7 days. I took the first 60mg is the office at 1500 AFTER a double albuterol neb treatment. I can run the fucking Boston Marathon right now. The above is how my brain interprets how the next week will proceed. Along with the anger and crying over the last 10 days, hunger can be added to the list.
Medical PTSD is the fancy name. I have it 110%.... better at the other end every time. Whatever thinks it can take me down, has not succeeded. I survive every time. Today is no different.
ya boy has officially, finally been cleared by allergy & immunology to reschedule my surgery! it was put on hold thanks to mcas back in september; the new date is january 22nd. 🎉 and not that it’s my choice, but my mast cells WILL be on their best behavior from now until then (and long after), or so help me. i’m gonna will it into existence. ••⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
in the meantime, i’m starting a new med for endometriosis pain/symptom management that i have a lot of hope for. the decision about what surgeries to have & when has been one of the hardest of my life (thinking about a full or even partial hysterectomy at age 23 is a lot, mildly put.) but overall, i really feel like i should say ‘my gynecologist is a gift’ way more often than i currently do bc she’s been amazing about everything. bottom line: i’m grateful to have landed in the office of someone who is genuinely committed to giving me autonomy over my body in ways my previous (male) doctor wasn’t. 2019, i’m coming for ya. 😎 #hopeful

In 1986, when I was 10-years-old I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I’ve now had diabetes for over 32 years. I’m not going to lie, it’s been a struggle. Modern medicine and technology has made a HUGE difference in improving the lives of people with diabetes. Still there is no cure, there are complications and many people succumb to this disease.
When I was diagnosed we had ZERO knowledge about environmental toxins and the negative impact they have on our bodies. My parents bought all sorts of over-the-counter medicine, cleaners, fragrances, candles and personal care items without ever thinking twice about it.

Since @ironmantri Kona is being aired again I'm looking back in my Ironman experience in Mont Tremblant this year.
This short video was coming in after the 112 mile bike ride which was right after I swam 2.4 miles. At this moment I was actually very happy to be getting off the bike, because my feet hurt me so much.
It's a weird emotion that you go through when you've completed 114.4 miles of an Ironman and you're actually happy to be putting on running shoes and your feet are in the ground. Even though I now had a freaking marathon ahead of me, I was happy.
Well, happy might be a incorrectly used word. But I was done with the bike and at that moment I did what I normally do, crack a "joke". While this is the stupidest thing I've ever done, I was happy to know I was on track for my timing and would probably cross the finish line.
After 13.1 miles of the marathon I started to hear @ironmanvoice start to announce other finishers in the Mont Tremblant village. It was exactly what I needed to hear and get me mentally ready for another 13.1 miles. Knowing that in just a few hours I would her, Brian you're an Ironman!
After all I've been through. All the hospital stays, all the medications, all the surgeries, all the adjustments to a new life with an ostomy, I was going to be an Ironman and now I can say I completed the ultimate endurance race.
Now looking back I will still say it's the stupidest thing I've ever done. But it is also and will always be one of the GREATEST things I've ever done. Chronic Illness didn't stop me. I told it who's boss, showed up at the start line, and crossed the finish line. I am an Ironman. .

.... What’s next? Haha this on top of my Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, paroxysmal supra-ventricular tachycardia, mast cell activation disorder...and probably some co-morbidities that are just waiting to be found! ...
... Now it’s just the waiting game until I see the POTS specialist in Calgary in a few months!
