It’s amazing how much research can go into a single work, no matter if it’s a short story or a novel.
Reading varied works and analyzing them contributes to developing true-to-life characters, complex plots, and everything in between, regardless of whether you read fiction, nonfiction, or both.
Sometimes, looking back, it dawns on me just how many different books added up to my own! It could be information I learned or just a general feel to the story—you never know how something will impact you.
So read often and widely. The benefits are far beyond what you expect.

#QOTD : Who/what motivates you to be a reader?
- My dad has been a pivotal figure to me in moulding me for what I am now: a proud bibliophile and a bibliosexual. He did so without even realizing it but he just simply read to us every night so that we (my siblings and I) get the knowledge and information. I still remember vividly every night he will read to us the Bible stories and the other children's books. I get fascinated and made a decision to check out the books myself (Bible included) to discover their own magic myself. Yes I do discover the magic in reading and it never fails to amaze me until today in ways that I think I can't explain to anyone because each reader will find its' own unique magic in every book as well as in the Harry Potter world, everyone has her/his own patronus charm. EXPECTO PATRONUM!
Stay weird everyone because weird is interesting.

Practical Magic was a favorite book and movie of mine growing up. I was so excited when I heard @ahoffmanwriter was writing the prequel, The Rules of Magic. And it did not disappoint. It's every bit as poetic and beautiful as I hoped. "We were not there when these dreadful things happened, when women were accused of being crows and messengers from hell. We were neither the judges nor the accused, but we carry these things with us, and we have to fight them. The best way to do this is to be who you are, every part of you, the good and the bad, the sorrowful and the joyous. You can never run away. There is nowhere to run to." -- Alice Hoffman - The Rules of Magic #bookstagram#practicalmagic#therulesofmagic#fortheloveofstory
Brene Brown is amazing. This book is so perfect for the divisive environment we are living in today. So many good insights here for how we can all start having meaningful conversations again instead of fighting and dehumanizing one another based on groups we belong to. "You are only free when you realize you belong no place - you belong every place - no place at all. The price is high. The reward is great." - Maya Angelou
I'm in the same boat and following her journey and seeing how far she has come is truly inspiring.

I started taking my writing journey seriously in September 2013. Only 3 years after graduating and working in the corporate world, I knew there had to be more. I knew life wasn’t meant to be monotonous and dull—waking up at 6AM to go to work just to come home, cook dinner, go to bed, and do it all over again. Robot, robot, robot 🤖 ・・・
I KNEW that I could have a life filled with curiosity, joy, passion, and imagination. A life where I created the rules and set no limits, no boundaries. A life where I could tell my stories, travel the world, and teach and meet others who wanted to do exactly the same.
It’s been 5 years—5 terrifying, awe-inspiring years—since I decided to take the leap. To believe in myself. To write and self-publish my books. To travel the world and meet writers who have the same goals. To teach and spread my message: that YOU matter, YOUR VOICE matters, and YOUR STORY matters—and the world needed all of these things YESTERDAY. ・・・
This book, right here, set me free. This book enabled me to open both my mind and heart to opportunities that never would have existed otherwise. To impact and connect with likeminded people on a daily basis. To follow what’s truly in my heart no matter what anyone else says or thinks.
THE ALPHA DRIVE set me free.
Happy #indieauthorday 📚 Wherever you’re at in your journey, KEEP GOING. Find the spark and with everything you have in you, keep it lit 🔥 Do not allow your dreams to pass you by. Do not allow your life to pass you by. The world deserves to know your story, but more importantly, SO DO YOU 💫
There are few things better than discovering the work of an author you love for the first time. After reading The Seas and The Dark Dark, I cant bring myself to read Samantha Hunt’s other two books yet. I want to savor them. If any of you haven’t read either of these yet - I’m so jealous of you. You won’t regret committing some time to them.

The week is nearly done, my motivation is low, and I'm not super impressed with my current read. I hope your weeks are going better than mine!

Today's bookstagram shout-out goes to @pagesofspring! Rayna's gorgeous theme is full of spring vibes.
The residency experience and my grad school experience are hard to describe. It’s so emotionally raw and powerful and beautiful. Hearing the voices of other emerging writers around me. It’s showing up and holding space and crying and laughing. It’s getting intimately close to people when you are used to not letting anyone get too close. There are no secrets. Ever. We expose ourselves through our writing and through that we expose the world. As I wrote in my most recent essay “Stories matter. The ones we tell ourselves. The ones we choose to listen to. The ones we ignore. This shapes who we are.” Individually and collectively. And you know what? Hearing what my peers and mentors have to say, gives me hope that we will change the world with our stories. #osucascadesmfa#recommendedreading#bookstagram @parisreview
“The purpose of a writer is to make revolution irresistible.” - sign in front of Tin House in Portland this summer. Like many of you, I’ve been a book lover since I was a small child. The passion just keeps growing, and I can’t wait to share what I’m currently reading and how it is teaching and inspiring me every single day.

Anthony Doerr is a magician. Okay, end of review.
No, but seriously, this guy is one of the best writers I've ever had the pleasure of reading. From his poetic prose to his short chapters that are the perfect length so that you feel like the story is moving incredibly quick; from his slightly magical twists on the world to his incredible understanding of how humans function... He's a phenomenal writer.
So, The Shell Collector is a collection of short stories. While the first story, which the book takes its name from, gives a good taste of his style, the first story I fell in love with from this collection is The Hunter's Wife, a beautiful tale about two people that fall in love, but come from two very different worlds.
But it's two of the last few stories that make me so passionate about this bunch of short stories. Two of my favourite EVER short stories are The Caretaker and Mkondo. The former follows a man that finds himself in his home country during a civil war, and where his life takes him; the later is yet another love story, in a way, that explores some very interesting dynamics.
Perhaps one of my favourite things about these stories is how Doerr finishes the story. He leaves things open to interpretation somewhat, lets you fill in the gaps. As they are stories that discuss how life can be fragile and hinge on small things, it seems fitting that an ending could go in multiple directions, that each time the story was played out in his head he couldn't see it go one way or another. The journeys are seriously breathtaking.
Read this author, there's a reason he's one of the biggest names at the moment (see All the Light we Cannot See, winner of a Pulitzer). Stories mentioned by name within review: 5/5. All others 4-4.5/5.
Finally got my hands on a copy of this great series! We don’t have Chapters here in California so I had to order them online. I’ll have to buy the final book when it comes in print. Can’t wait to read them @candaceosmond #amreading#darktidesseries#pirates
Letting go of long-held beliefs can be so scary. When I began the shift from organized religion to individualized spirituality, I had to grieve the loss of security I'd had surrounding death. In giving up the pearly gates and golden streets, the sheer scope of our mortality felt suffocating. Just...that's it? No precious reunions with those we've lost? No bodies renewed and made whole, free of their earthly suffering? No mansion? No Savior's embrace? I felt shortchanged, and it made me mad, and it made me bitter, and it made me so scared I couldn't hardly breathe sometimes. And then, these words. These blasphemous, beautiful, sacrilegious, sacred words. They saved me in bigger and better ways than the Bible ever did. These passages taught me to never fear death, and that is some serious lingual voodoo shit. Every day, I aspire to write something that will be a fraction this powerful, something that will make somebody just a little less scared and a little less alone in their humanity. If I can't be a Philip Pullman, then I can be a Lyra. #hisdarkmaterials#theamberspyglass#lyrabelacqua#philippullman#writersofinstagram#amwriting#amreading#losingmyreligion
