23 Years Ago today, New Line Cinema dropped “Mortal Kombat”. The movie peaked at #1 in the box office, grossed over $121 million (about $299 million today) & is recognized as a cult classic. The movie was directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, produced by Lawrence Kasanoff & stars Robin Shou, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Linden Ashby, Bridgette Wilson, Talisa Soto, Christopher Lambert, Trevor Goddard, Chris Casamassa, Francois Petit, Keith Cooke, Tom Woodruff, Kenneth Edwards, Steven Ho, & Gregory McKinney. “Mortal Kombat” is based off the widely & critically acclaimed, controversial video game that was released in 1992, that tells the story of three different mortals who have been chosen specifically to compete in a outer-world fatal tournament called Mortal Kombat. Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, & Sonya Blade are all chosen by the God of Thunder, Rayden, to compete, each with a personal vendetta for being in the tournament. A outer realm known as Outworld, ruled by a ruthless & poweful emperor named Shao Kahn, wants to take over Earth & it’s civilians, & has to win 10 Mortal Kombat tournaments that is ran once every 1000 years, to do so. This is the 9th tournament, & if they Kahn wins, he gets to enslave & rule Earth, which makes the fight amongst the mortals that much more important; all they need to do is win one tournament, & Earth will be safe forever from Outworld. The film became a HUGE SUCCESS amongst movie goers & the MK fans alike, & still widely regarded as one of the best action video game-to-movie feature films of the 90s. TEST YOUR MIGHT ✔️. So the past few days I’ve been trying to spark creativity for my submission to #TheCanvasProject — I’ve had a bunch of ‘great ideas’ but nothing panned out. Now with only 3 days left to send it off to #Brooklyn & no good sketches. I realized I was fighting against the clock; fighting the deadline.
And that’s when I realized that my current situation (which I face daily in advertising and design) is a very common one for us, creatives... so I drew the battle in a @newyorkercartoons style with a touch of #StreetFighter .
This is the first rough and I can’t wait to ink it on the mini canvas! 💪🏼 #CanvasPrompt
Back in the early 90s, a Marvel employee named Jim Lee left Marvel while taking some of their other employees with him. What would these guys do? They would create Image Comics which would give us series such as Spawn and The Walking Dead. When Image was first getting off the ground, they were known for comic characters who seemed to be reimagined versions of existing characters in both Marvel as well as DC. One of those properties is a series that some would refer to as an X-Men clone. It was good enough to have a cartoon with an awesome 90s theme song, action figures, and this video game!
