Let’s talk about something controversial: Trolls: The Beat Goes On! movie
I’m curious to know other peoples opinions on the matter (please weigh in). When DreamWorks secured the rights to this movie I was more excited than I’ve ever been to watch anything in my life. I thought about what I would wear to the premier, how I would be willing to pay the extra dollars to see the movie opening weekend first in line - thought I’d even treat myself to the V.I.P theatre which I never do, etc. Unfortunately, the second that I saw the animations in trailers and on posters all of that excitement went out the damn window. I was genuinely so disappointed in their appearance... I try to get over this but I just can’t. I’m really so confused about all of it. They’re based off of Thomas Dam’s trolls which are so beautiful and so special.. the trolls in this movie do not resemble his in any way, shape or form. They look nothing like his original drawings. They’re RAINBOW and so annoying. I haven’t watched the movie because I just can’t bring myself to, it gets under my skin and starts to irk me the second I hear Justin Timberlake belting out that one song about dancing. I get that children are probably more inclined to latch on to this simplistic and more conventionally attractive weird super anthropomorphized version of the troll...(they have eyelashes) but this movie really failed me and more importantly, in my opinion, it failed trolls. How amazing would it be to watch a stop motion film of characters based off of Dam’s sweet drawings and original carvings true to form? I was going to type more but I’m just sad now :-( (Trolls: World Tour... the movie sequel comes out in 2020)
Pictured above: me in a Poppy face mask my friend gave me... taking my first step towards acceptance, an original drawing by Dam, Dam himself with one of his squirrel animals, a description from one of the artists who did character design for the movie, and a critique I can relate to.
