@abirueda in “hotline” (2017) for @curatedbygirls wearing eyewear by @adamselman . a series about performing to be seen, mirroring social media. whilst it celebrates female sexual liberation, it serves to question who the spectator really is and how it is him who molds the performance. #martincantos
To say that the passing of this woman crushed my heart, would be an understatement..
I was raised on Aretha Franklin.
To me, and a lot of musicians, she is the pure embodiment of what it sounds like when you roar from the depths of your spirit. What it's like when you can take the pain and the sorrow that life throws at you, and turn it into a thing of beauty.
This woman taught herself how to play the piano even though she didn't read a lick of music!! She taught me that it is okay to SING BIG.
She taught me that it is okay to walk CONFIDENTLY in your talent, no matter how you look or how people may initially perceive you.
I am a black woman vocalist with curves in my hills.. So I do not, for one moment, take for granted the barriers that she knocked down with each success she achieved and milestone passed.
When I first moved to NYC, the song I sang at the audition that pretty much launched my professional career was Rocksteady. I simply felt that there was no other song or artist that could showcase what my voice could do, yet humble me and challenge me to be better all at once.. and I was right.
She was, is and will always be the standard.
I love her endlessly and feel honored that I was able to witness such an iconic legacy in my lifetime.
RIP Songbird ♥️
