Day 7 of sharing my 365 yoga practice = put yourself on video and tell us why you practice everyday. 🙈 I’m an actor/performer but putting myself on camera without a script and talking about something I love is really hard and vulnerable. I almost didn’t do this and bailed but here you go! That’s me after a 12 hour day of yoga teacher training. Still love the practice. There are so many more reasons I practice and have stayed with the practice every single day that words just don’t do justice to because it’s an energy you can’t quite describe. Least fave: Dancer 💃 I used to feel so steady and like I could hold it all day. Since baby, it seems so “wide open” to me - super vulnerable and all weird and clenchy about my c section scar.⁣

 Current fave: Half moon 🌙 This one feels strong as hell. Now that I’ve found my core (😂), I love the grounding and openness all at once. ⁣

Funny how it’s constantly changing, right? Everyday I show up. Everyday the practice is the same. Everyday I am totally different.⁣

The AM Yoga Challenge is a wrap, and I’m still catching up.  Day 2: Show your favorite pose.  Half Moon in my favorite places, Sleeping Bear Bay and Empire Bluffs Trail. It’s much more than just poses... Yoga has carried me through one of the biggest life changes I have gone through. And while I am not ready to share that part of my story I will say this...I know I am capable of handling pain because I am capable of healing.

Child’s pose. 😍 
This is my favorite pose because as “easy” as it looks it took me almost an entire year before it came with ease. I would fight this pose so much for whatever reason. It could be because it didn’t seem challenging enough or I had to be still. 
But, now when I find myself here I can breathe and actually connect with myself. I find myself in this pose often throughout my day...almost like okay here I am I surrender. 
Which often doubles up as my intentional prayer time. 😍🧘🏽‍♀️ @amyoga111

I got started because one of my teachers challenged me to practice everyday for 30 days and to then just see how I felt after those 30 days.⁣⁣

I did the 30 days, I’ll be honest, it wasn’t easy. But after I realized I felt better than I had in a long time. So I kept going!!⁣⁣

I yoga everyday because:⁣⁣
*feel connected to self⁣⁣

*easier to fall/stay asleep⁣⁣
*process emotion⁣⁣
*clear thought & focus⁣⁣

Besides the obvious physical health of working out everyday. 💪🏼⁣⁣

There are millions of ways to take care of yourself. Yoga makes sense for me because it takes care of me on a lot of levels. I like the bang for my buck. ⁣

I already posted the other arm balances from my shoot with @modbettieportraits so I thought I'd use this opportunity to post the last one: #firefly. 🔥
One of my teachers told our class a great story about a firefly. It landed on her but wasn't lighting up. She told it it needed to light up, to show off its gift, so the world would know it's special. When it flew away without ever lighting up, she realized the things she said to the firefly weren't actually for the firefly. It was for her. 
We bring our baggage, good and bad, to every moment of our lives. It shows up in how we treat each other and ourselves, in how we talk to each other and ourselves, how we act, how we make decisions, and what we think. We cannot cut off the strings of all that's come before to create us, but we can learn to recognize what we bring and why. And once we've had the opportunity to meet and get to know each piece of baggage in this way, we can see how, why, and what we are, which then shows us these things about others and the world as a whole. That level of knowing--of seeing--can eliminate anxiety and depression because, among other things, it enables the person to see their power and forgive where they've faltered. Imagine then, the inner peace that could bring. It just takes practice. Lots and lots of practice. . .

This pose means a lot to me because I can remember the days when I stayed in deep squat, or tried the pose without lifting my toes off the ground over and over, until one day I could do it. They provide endless variations and possibility, keeping a practice that gives us great daily routine a never ending edge on the days we need it. 
I extra love that they never fail to keep that good ol’ ego in check. ✅

I used to love camel. And I used to dislike fish. Now, camel feels uncomfortable and fish never feels long enough. I'm constantly amazed at how quickly a body can change, whether it's a change we like or something we'd rather not deal with. 😉 
And either way, that's why we practice.

And forearm wheel! Have actually made progress, but the shoulders and back are still a hard no.

If there is an open shoulder and thoracic spine struggle bus, I’d be a pretty good driver of said bus 😂

A few years ago I went to Level 1, a teacher training, with @baronbaptisteyoga in Arizona.  One of the best trips I’ve ever been on. AND I learned how to do this arm balance while I was there. #ekapadakoundinyasana #baptisteyoga #balance #possibilities

We gutted our second story, converting a hallway and two rooms-- the master bedroom and my former yoga/ meditation room-- into one large loft bedroom. I’ve got plenty of reasons my mind & body resist this beautiful posture. 
At the end of the day the particulars don’t matter. 
What matters is that I notice the reasons, am comfortable sitting with them, and create equal amounts of breaking resistance & giving myself grace. 
It’s daily effort that brings abundant ease & it’s worth every single moment.

The neck is released and open in both poses and I still struggle with that and still have some pain with it.

Speaks volumes about how much I resist this pose that I waited until the end of the evening to do it. I am aware that the energy I put into resisting, and holding back actually makes it more difficult... like so many things😜

And when people around me are transitioning from this pose to wheel and back, I'm over here feeling like my back is made out of cement and my shoulders never going to open in that way. I’ve been balancing on my hands since I was a lil tot. ⁣

So when I got serious about my yoga practice in my 20’s I thought, “Abs, you used to be a gymnast. You SHOULD be better at handstands.”⁣

Well, I’m not.⁣
I got hips.⁣
I have a mostly healed shoulder injury.⁣
And I just plain don’t practice hand balances enough to be really good at them.⁣
⁣
It’s highly likely that I don’t practice them enough because of that should statement I carry around in my back pocket.⁣
⁣
The challenge here is not so much about strength or knowledge, though I could take more of both.⁣
⁣
My challenge is my Own Damn Ego.⁣

This pose has brought a lot of lessons on taking things slow. This is the first time attempting the flip grip in several months after a shoulder thing showed up--again. I don't usually want to take things slow. I want to dive in head first doing mach 3! This year, my right shoulder, left knee, and possibly a hernia (! do women even get hernias?!) have forced me to start listening. So, in honoring the process, there was a significant amount of warm up time before the camera was even turned on tonight (I almost lost daylight for the shot! 😂), I stopped short of the foot with the second hand, and held back from kicking harder into deeper extension. 😕 I loathe holding back. But I loathe injuries more, so this is me finally getting the memo.
