Had an hour to kill in Durham so I went to @nashermuseum for some #inspiration. Holy shit right after a casting class all this metal (both modern and not so much) was JUST what I was looking for! Have to go back when I have more time!

Artist Carole Feuerman is a hyperrealist—she creates works that seem unusually realistic. Her 2015 limited edition sculpture “Bibi on the Ball” required her to create a complete figure with convincingly wet skin and swim suit, seated on a large beach ball. Feuerman rose to the challenge. @lamodernauctions might sell the first sculpture in the series for $80,000. Ernest Chaplet began his career in 1848 as an apprentice at Sèvres. After more than 30 years in the employ of large ceramics firms, he eventually opened an atelier where he created simple stoneware forms ornamented with Japanese-inspired designs.
•
Drawing upon the philosophy of the English Arts and Crafts movement, Chaplet believed strongly in offering an alternative to mass-production by encouraging a creative workshop atmosphere. He ultimately came to believe that glaze alone provided sufficient decoration for the ceramic art of the new millennium.
•
A pioneer in France’s artistic renewal of the 1870s, Chaplet was among the most innovative ceramists of his era. Between May and June 1886, Gaugin decorated stoneware, often cylindrical vases and mugs from Chaplet's studios output, where he intermittently dabbled in pottery until 1895.

Jean-Joseph Carriès was a French sculptor and ceramist, best remembered for the inventive and technically-advanced Japonist stoneware that he produced in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye in the 1880s and the early 1890s.
•
In 1879, the same year that he exhibited a plaster bust of Molière at the Salon, Carriès attended the Exposition Universelle, where he was impressed by Japanese ceramics. Living in Montparnasse, his neighborhood friends included collector Paul Jeanneney, who owned a selection of Japanese ceramics, and with whom he shares ideas on creating Japonist stoneware.
•
Carriès exhibited his first stoneware pieces in Paris in 1889 and was immediately hailed for his inventive organic forms and splendid dripping glazes. By the Salon of 1892, his work had become iconic and he’d developed a cult-following known as the École de Carriès— though, amidst museum acquisitions and commissions, Carriès passed away in 1894.

Painter and ceramic modeler Ernest Carriere, brother of painter Eugene Carriere, worked in Theodore Deck's studio from 1890.
•
He was noted for painted or relief decoration depicting animals. Because of his use of strong outlines, his work sometimes resembles cloisonné enamels.
•
Carriere was also an accomplished painter, sculptor, and member of the Societe des Artistes Francais from 1888. Shortly before his death, he became the artistic director at Sèvres.

Ernest Bussière debuted as a sculptor at the Salon of 1883. Thirteen years later he began to provide sculptural models for the Luneville faïencerie of Keller & Guerin and continued to collaborate with the firm until 1909.
•
Most of his ceramic works were based on abstract plant forms and made with a fine white earthenware clay, glazed twice and fired at low temperatures, resulting in a thin "skin" of refracting pigments on top a velvety base.
•
Bussière's final pottery exhibition took place in Nancy, his home town, in 1909, after which he returned to his life as a sculptor and professor at the Nancy École des Beaux-Arts.

The Amphora factory was located in Turn-Teplitz (now in the Czech Republic); once a spa town that attracted the likes of Goethe and Beethoven, its luster eventually gave way to industrial activity.
•
Amphora’s placement in this region was advantageous because local riverbeds provided an abundant supply of kaolin.
•
Initially, Amphora imitated the Orientalist and Neo-Baroque styles; with the combined talents of skilled designers like Eduard Stellmacher, Paul Dachsel, and a host of decorators from the Special Ceramics School of Teplitz, Amphora soon developed a unique genre of Art Nouveau ceramics.

The Amphora factory was located in Turn-Teplitz (now in the Czech Republic); once a spa town that attracted the likes of Goethe and Beethoven, its luster eventually gave way to industrial activity. • Amphora’s placement in this region was advantageous because local riverbeds provided an abundant supply of kaolin. • Initially, Amphora imitated the Orientalist and Neo-Baroque styles; with the combined talents of skilled designers like Eduard Stellmacher, Paul Dachsel, and a host of decorators from the Special Ceramics School of Teplitz, Amphora soon developed a unique genre of Art Nouveau ceramics. • • • #jasonjacquesgallery  #amphora  #newyorkgalleries  #uppereastsidegalleries  #ceramicart  #artnouveaumovement  #contemporaryart  #decorativeart  #sculpture  #21stcenturysculpture  #contemporarysculpture  #art  #modernart  #gallery  #naturalmaterials  #clay  #fineartgallery  #ceramicsgallery  #contemporaryceramics  #modernceramics  #modernsculpture  #interiordesign  #interiordesigner  #decorative  #abstract

In 1897, painter and ceramist Galileo Chini founded a small factory, L'Arte della Ceramica, in Florence with partner Vittoria Giunta. Inspired by early tin-glazed earthenware, the work of Eastern potters, and paintings by Klimt, Chini specialized in stoneware vases with decoration in rich colors.
•
Despite the fact that L'Arte della Ceramica was a small factory with limited capacity, Chini produced work that had a profound effect on the style of Italian ceramics. His work was sold throughout Europe and the United States. Chini participated in the Universal Exhibitions in London, Turin, and the Biennial in Venice.
•
Chini also painted canvases that were hung in Italian museums and designed opera sets for his close friend Giacomo Puccini. Between 1911 and 1913, Chini lived in Bangkok while creating frescos for the palace of the King of what was then called Siam. Upon his return to Florence he began to teach at the l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze.

In 1853, Miklos Zsolnay established a ceramics company that quickly rose to international acclaim. Zsolnay’s worldwide acceptance was due in large part to Viennese merchant Ernst Wahliss, who was Zsolnay’s international representative.
•
In 1893, influenced by Clement Massier’s lusterware, Zsolnay’s chemists developed a rich iridescent glaze, marketed as “eosin.” The term, named after the Greek goddess Eos, goddess of dawn, was soon to be used to denote the rainbow-hued iridescent finish that became somewhat of a signature.
•
From the 1950s onward, as the political and cultural atmosphere in Hungary relaxed, the Zsolnay factory permitted designers to produce ceramics that explored modern abstraction. Guest artists like Victor Vasarely and Eva Zeisel conceived beautiful pieces that revived earlier Zsolnay organic shapes and metallic glazes.

Séraphin Nikolaevich Soudbinine was born in Russia in 1870. At the age of 32, Soudbinine moved to Paris and began to study at Auguste Rodin’s studio where he was Rodin’s primary stone carver for many years.
•
Particularly well known for his work on Rodin’s The Hand of God, Soudbinine was an accomplished sculptor in his own right and also collaborated with artist Jean Dunand on several significant Art Deco design projects.
•
Soudbinine began to make ceramics later in his life, exhibiting works in New York during the 1920s. His ceramics combine the influences of Russian folk art, Chinese art, and notably pre-columbian wares from Mesoamerica.

Born into the artistic elite of Copenhagen, Bindesbøll showed considerable artistic talent in early childhood. He trained as an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, though from 1880 onwards became increasingly interested in ceramics.
•
He produced hundreds of ceramic works in a strong, spontaneous style. His designs were finely executed by professional potters who wheel-turned ceramics according to Bindesbøl’s drawings. Bindesbøll then decorated the wet clay and applied glaze to the vessels.
•
In 1900 Bindesbøll contributed to the Danish section for craft and design at the Paris Exposition Universelle. There he displayed ceramics and silver of his own design. Although Bindesbøll's contemporaries did not recognize his genius, famed art historian Nikolaus Pevsner called him "the most original ceramic artist of his generation."

Léon Kann studied sculpture with Aimé Millet and distinguished animalier sculptor Pierre Louis Rouillard. He concentrated on smaller decorative works which he exhibited in the Salons of the Sociéte des Artistes Français.
•
Kann was also a designer at the Sévres Porcelain Manufactory from 1896-1915. When the artistic director of Sévres called upon prominent designers of the period to create daring new forms, glazes and decoration, Léon Kann was among them.
•
Kann is striking in his ability to balance the aesthetic direction of the Art Nouveau era with the practical needs of usable ceramic wares, in a time when Sevres encouraged its designers and artists to experiment.

The son of Edmond Lachenal, Raoul Lachenal worked in his father's studio until 1911, when he established a new workshop at Boulogne-sur-Seine. Lachenal proved himself to be accomplished in his own right as a designer and artisan.
•
After exhibiting his Art Nouveau stoneware for the first time at Paris salons in 1904, Lachenal adopted an additional decorative mode: incising geometrical designs on stoneware and filling the sections with vividly contrasting slips.
•
Toward the end of his career, Lachenal added porcelain to his repertoire, using deep black and salmon pink as ground for white ornamentation.

Paul Dachsel was the son-in-law of Alfred Stellmacher, the founder of the Amphora Pottery company in Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic), where he served as a designer from 1893 until 1905.
•
Dachsel was instrumental in creating new motifs and designs inspired by Art Nouveau. In 1905, he founded his own pottery studio, “Kunstkeramik Paul Dachsel,” where he followed his own direction in designing ceramics.
•
Though he maintained his natural sources of inspiration, he leaned towards designs that favored simple forms elaborated with applied handles, rims, and ornaments, earthy colors as well as folded, flat, and soft-edged shapes.

In 1900, Decoeur was awarded a bronze medal at the Paris World Fair as Edmond Lachenal’s assistant. In the following year, Decoeur was awarded, as an assistant, the ability to produce his own work in conjunction with Lachenal’s name.
•
After his time with Lachenal, Decoeur moved to 14-16 rue Gudin and set up his own atelier, “L’Art Céramique.” He also ran a small gallery. There, he was joined by another young ceramist, Fernand Rumèbe, with whom he would work side-by-side for the next three years.
•
The years 1907-08 were a turning point for Decouer. He moved to Fontenay-aux-Roses, a town just beyond Châtillon, where he set up kilns that he used for the rest of his career. When Decoeur exhibited in 1914, at Paris’ Galerie Roger Levesque, his stoneware was described as having “sober forms and opulent materials.”

After studying engineering at the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in Paris, Jeanneney moved back to Strasbourg, where he studied art from 1885 to 89. •
Afterwards, he returned to Paris and joined a community of artists known as the “cite fleurie”.
•
The fortunate and gifted Frenchman took a liking to the popular Japoniste style and built an impressive collection of East Asian antiques and objects. He also purchased and showed works by friends Jean Carriès, Ernest Chaplet, Adrien Dalpayrat, and Auguste Delaherche.
•
In the 1890s, Jeanneney produced ceramics at a more consistent rate. His strong background in mineralogy and chemistry helped him create singular palettes of color and textures that distinguish his work. His popularity even made way for him to collaborate with Auguste Rodin.

By the late 1880s, merchant Ernst Wahliss had established himself as Vienna’s leading retailer in porcelain and ceramic goods. He had run a ceramic store in Vienna since 1863, whose rapid international success enabled him to open stores in major cities across Europe.
•
Bolstered by his role in supplying many of the European royal families with ceramics of the highest quality, Wahliss purchased the Alfred Stellmacher factory in Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia (today the Czech Republic), and began to produce decorative ceramics.

After Ernst’s death in 1900, his son Gerhard Martin Wahliss acquired the factory and continued to create a variety of functional and decorative items in earthenware and porcelain. Hand painted with richly colored enamels, such decors represented the vanguard in Austrian ceramics at the time.

By the late 1880s, merchant Ernst Wahliss had established himself as Vienna’s leading retailer in porcelain and ceramic goods. He had run a ceramic store in Vienna since 1863, whose rapid international success enabled him to open stores in major cities across Europe. • Bolstered by his role in supplying many of the European royal families with ceramics of the highest quality, Wahliss purchased the Alfred Stellmacher factory in Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia (today the Czech Republic), and began to produce decorative ceramics. • After Ernst’s death in 1900, his son Gerhard Martin Wahliss acquired the factory and continued to create a variety of functional and decorative items in earthenware and porcelain. Clément Massier's story begins with his great-grandfather Pierre Massier, who established the family's ceramics practice in the years leading up to the French Revolution in Vallauris, a Mediterranean town located approximately one mile from the seaside harbor of Golfe-Juan.
•
In 1883, Clément Massier moved the operation to Golfe-Juan, where the studio expanded into a factory-gallery complex, and even included an elaborate tea house. Within the same year Massier, now commanding 120 employees, began developing and showing his brilliant luster glazes.
•
Massier’s break through in collaboration with his primary artistic director Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer resulted in the perfection of these glazes for which he is so well known.

Hoentschel was an internationally-acclaimed interior designer and decorator; it was not long until he was regularly sought out to provide British nobility and members of the Rothschild family with art dating to the Middle Ages, as well as luxurious lacquers, ivory, or ceramics, sourced from the Far East.
•
Notably, Hoentschel was a tastemaker, not an artistan. In the same way that Louis Comfort Tiffany's signature appears on works created by others under his aegis, Hoentschel's mark appears on ceramics made by Jean Carriès and other French ceramists.
•
His studio was said to resemble a magical treasure trove, and his reputation was such that he was commissioned to design and oversee the decoration of the pavilion of the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900.

Doat began working at the Sèvres National Manufactory in 1877 where he specialized in pâte-sur-pâte decoration on pottery. Established in his own right by 1895, Doat opened his own studio where he developed macrocrystaline glazes for much positive critical acclaim.
•
Doat was eventually dismissed from Sevres for maintaining his private atelier, which competed with factory production. In June 1909 he was invited to University City, Missouri near St. Louis, where he was hired on as director of the ceramics school.
•
During his final years at University City, Doat led his students in the production of hundreds of novel pieces for the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. That year he returned to his atelier at 47 rue Brancas in Paris and received acclaim for his work into the 1930s.

Theodoor Christiaan Adriaan Colenbrander (known as T.A.C., despite the order of names) began his career working for architects in Holland and later for a Dutch firm in Paris until 1884, when he joined Rotenburg, a newly established ceramics firm in the Hague.
•
Architect, ceramist, and painter Colenbrander is also regarded as the first Dutch industrial designer.
•
His work has a sense of the whimsy of majolica apothecary jars combined with the striking clarity of traditional Dutch garnitures. His work is recognizable for its bright pigmentation and quasi-abstract decoration.
