🌟Guten Morgen meine Lieben🌟

🌟Sisi🌟

I love exploring these clothes. I love the choice to be in them. Becoming one with them. Honoring the great grandmothers, who were not proper without them. We wear shifts and stays and corsets and petticoats and all of these layers because through them...we tell their stories. And our own. Shift sewn by the talented @pennyrivercostumes

Today I had the most wonderful treat - a chance to examine some mid-late 19th century extant gowns at the Wylie House (part of @iubloomington) you’ll believe me when I tell you I almost started crying because I could not believe what was right in front of me. This is just one of the three dresses I looked at, but there were also shoes, stockings, mitts and parasols. Plus loads of reproduction costumes for special events. Now to brainstorm how I can spend more time there!

To my costume historians - the linings of all of the skirts were a brown glossy looking textile. My guess is waxed cotton and the director (who is a historian and conservator but not in the field of dress) thought it could be some sort of lanolin coating. I have no experience with this type of fabric. Anyone have any thoughts? Dresses are likely from 1858-1880s. #19thcentury #19thcenturyfashion #19thcenturydress #wyliehouse #hoosierhistory

Swipe right for a sense of scale. This is an exceptional quality portrait miniature of a young lady that was painted in England during the early 19th century, circa 1820 to 1835. This is one of the finest Regency era portrait miniatures that we have encountered; the attention to detail is truly outstanding. It’s scarce to find a portrait miniature of this fineness painted on card or paper. What little thing makes you happy? It can be anything, even eating a wafle layer by layer. For me it is every time to see green grass in the fields when I go by car on the highway or by train☺️. I don't know why, but this bright green color of grass makes me happier.🌱⠀

Laces
(From tip to button)
(1) Needlepoint Lace
Venetian needlelace, with its Baroque design including exotic flowers with curving stems, became the most expensive and fashionable lace in Europe in the 17th Century
Linen
Vernice, Italy (2) Point de Gaze Lace
This is a type of needlelace originating in Belgium. It is named after its gauze-like net ground and characterised by naturalistic floral patterns.
Late 19th Century, Belgium
Cotton (3) Reticella Needlepoint Lace
It’s constructed on a grid of plaited thread. Here the original, scalloped ‘vandyked’ edging has later been filled in to adhere to new fashions in lace
Year 1650, reworked 1650 Italy
Linen (4) Rose Point Lace
One of the Venetian needlelaces “rose” refers to the raised, three-dimensional nature of pattern. The linking bars between the motifs are decorated with picoted rings.
17th Century, Venice, Italy
Linen (5) Vandyke Border if Bobbin Lace
The pattern motifs in bobbin lace are usually worked in cloth stitch, forming areas resembling woven cloth. This border has 49 repeats of the same motif.
1635-65, Flanders, Belgium
Linen (6) Bobbin Lace
This very fine bobbin lace is testament to the skill of 17th Century linen producers. Very difficult in design to the border above, it has a delicate, open pattern.
17th Century, Maybe Italy

Rome held a special place in the hearts of Danish Golden Age painters. They loved depicting atmospheric and sunny landscapes with joyous Romans and classical architecture. Here the Danish painter Jørgen Sonne has painted a colorful carnival.

This amazing painting is exhibited at Randers Kunstmuseum (@randerskunstmuseum) where you can use Vizgu as your personal art guide. Find the link in our bio.

Variation on a Greek key pattern that was in vogue in the 1860s. Photographs of the period and periodicals talk about the geometric patterning that graced skirts and bodices. I've been on a bit of a hiatus, working on some paintings, and now a few quick hats before #teslacon2019 I had a plan for two new dresses, but all my plans were thrown off when I got rather sick and my timeline shifted. (So is life!)
Here is a #wip pic of a green silk taffeta hat I'm making to match my plaid silk dress. (Replacing the light green flat hat I made before.) Silk is from @silkbaron (as always!) More photos once its finished!

“I belong with you and you belong with me” Jeweled lovers or at least that’s what I would like to think they were. The frame of these two miniatures is what really amazed me studded with turquoise, garnet, amethyst and wonderful old cut paste. Late Georgian or early Victorian? What are your thoughts?

Metal Bibbin Lace
Bobbin lace made from precious metals was a popular choice for trimmings on fashion, ecclesiastical textiles and furniture. The guilt metal threads caught the light and added a contrasting texture to the design, structure and finish of the fabric it was pair with. Some trimming incorporated spangles, as in this silver fragment.

Just finished my chemise for a 1860 civil war dress I'm currently working on for November's project. 👗I made the corset a couple years back which I'll be using for this project. Will be making the drawers next👖
.
My original plan was to hand sew this project, but due to wanting to complete it by early December for an event, it will be half and half of machine and hand sewing for certain parts of the garment. I still want to display some hand stitching details 📍✂️

This is a rather uncommon purse displaying one's love for their mother as exhibited by the words "Souvenir" and "Filial" in gold glass beads on either sides of the purse. The inscription indicate that purse was a present from a child to his or her mother. I am inclined to think that it was executed by a loving daughter!
This item is available through my store L’Antique Demeure on Ruby Lane!

Wer sagt mir heut' was morgen noch zählt,
Siehst du was ich seh',
🌟Sisi🌟

This young woman lived in what was then known as Turkestan Krai (1867-1918), and modern day Kyrgyzstan. While technically the land at that time was under the governorship of Russia, “Turkestan remained an isolated colonial outpost with an administration that preserved many distinctive features from the previous Islamic regimes, including Qadis’ courts and a ‘native’ administration that devolved much power to local Aksakals (elders or headmen).”
—
Similar to the portraits I have rendered from Persia and Egypt, this girl’s hair as braided into dozens of long, black braids, reaching to her waist. —
If there is a particular people or location you would like to see ancestors from, let me know :)
