Ah, Jaco…! This record was bought by my mum on a whim and it made my ears open and my already high opinion of her soar. I had never heard of Jaco Pastorius before but he became a touchstone of musical creativity. I began recognising his style in tracks by Weather Report and Joni Mitchell – even Ian Hunter – and coming to the realisation that playing bass guitar could be as creative as any ‘melodic’ lead instrument.
I coveted this record of my mum’s and borrowed it whenever I could to impress others with my musical taste. I bought Pastorius’ second album ‘Word of Mouth’ while travelling in the USA but remarkable as it was, it never impressed me as much as this first album. The interplay with percussionist Don Alias on ‘Donna Lee’, the funked-up assurance of ‘Come On, Come Over’, the beauty of ‘Continuum’, the frenetic urgency of ‘Kuru/Speak Like a Child’, the sublimity of ‘Portrait of Tracy’ - and that’s only Side One…!
Pastorius was a phenomenon - as Herbie Hancock states on the back cover - his remarkable technique and ability to fuse styles with sensitivity and risk make him impossible to ignore, even if jazz is not your ‘thing’. He was too bright to remain, a genius that burnt out with too much energy - fuelled by substances and mania - “a bright star in a dark age” in the words of Joni… Even if this was his only album it would be testament to his exceptionality.
Standout track: I love the singing-bass focus of tracks like ‘Donna Lee’, ‘Continuum’ and ‘Portrait of Tracy’ but I have to say that the track which always makes me yearn for more is the closing one, ‘Forgotten Love’ - with its aching piano chords (courtesy of Herbie Hancock) and searching strings and not a bass to be heard… It is the compositional Jaco that trumps everything in the end - but I still love putting the needle down on ‘Donna Lee’ to start a listening session…
Great poster but not a great film. #kriskristofferson wasn't convincing as the bad guy and the threat to general public just didn't shock me enough . If there had been some flashbacks or backstory into his time in 'nam it would have added some much needed richness. The story is an interesting one just poorly executed. The whole thing is just kinda bland with a jarring hillbilly score slapping you in the face every time somebody Jumps into a car! #vigilanteforce#janmichaelvincent#victoriaprincipal#1976#nam
