In the last year I have learned a lot about what it takes to be a friend. There’s a lot of sacrifice involved, and that wasn’t something I’d ever been particularly gifted at. For me, I’d often see only myself, my own side of the story, my own hungers for things in life, but after a while you realize how unfulfilling it can be.
I’ve had many opportunities now, and find that they’re infinitely enhanced when you share them. @joshuaminnich and myself have been able to team up on a few things, like this project for @shopemersonpark. We’re still in the thick of it, but it’s a gift to see how our two worlds can collide on paper, product and how our two stories can help shape someone else’s. To be someone’s true friend takes a lot, it gives a lot too. I’m so grateful for all the people who have come and gone in my life who at some point I’ve called friend. I think that resonates with all of us. What you create in this life may not outlast you, but as far as I can see, stories shared have a far greater chance - and greater purpose.
Thanks for being such a good pal Josh, and to Michael of Emerson Park for trusting us, and to all our other incredible clients, and all of my friends. Seriously feeling the love today. Also, hundreds of you messaged in our stories, so THANK YOU! I am still reading all of them.
Good luck out there today!
Moving forward with the “inspired by” series (these are soon drawing to a close, I’m thinking...)
So, I’ve already done a piece on @BonIver, but I truly think a huge piece of my inspiration comes from the man behind that band himself, and my current favorite living musician, Justin Vernon (or @blobtower). Obviously Bon is his “big thing,” but behind that there are more incredible projects, including @VolcanoChoir, DeYarmond Edison, Big Red Machine, and several others. With his lyrics and musical approach, he absolutely heightens my creative spirit. Being able to also meet the guy a few months ago and speak face-to-face was something else as well. I’d encourage everyone to check out those projects, as well as his own self-titled work!
Just a snapshot of this @surlybikes Disc Trucker says so much. A Tubus rack and fenders says it ready for adventures. And, the irreverent placement of our shop logo is by design. @1924house did such a great job with our branding that we randomly put them somewhere on the bikes we sell and feel they blend in. #1924us#1924house#branding#unpredictyourjourney#adventuretime#surlybikes

"I think it’s misleading when people offer stereo-typical advice like: “don’t go into business with loved ones” because frankly - even when the going gets tough - it’s probably the coolest thing about what I get to do. Everyday I wake up to the sound of inspiration, I share so much blessing in spending more of my life with someone I admire and really respect. It’s tough in long distance when you can’t see someone, feel them or hear the emotion about their day. As much as writing and phone calls can help, the in-person touch is so appreciated. Elle-May came home from a day of running errands and it wasn’t until she came in and we started cooking together that she said: “sometimes, I think we take each other for granted” and it’s true! It’s so easy to forget how amazing a life is when it’s amazing so consistently. Little hang ups become massive in the face of ungratefulness, there’s no use in self-pity or sulking. In a world so bent on keeping people in their boxes, love isn’t some rarity. Love is great and abundant among all of us, and happiness can be shared vastly in simple ways. And for us, it comes in the form of laughing and new ideas and pushing ourselves past arguments into great achievement. Faith and gratitude keep love really refreshing and, plainly put, successful."

Anotha one of these “inspired by” pieces...
Yet another source of inspiration of mine is none other than the dads in @SilentPlanetBand. Historic school essays have been fueled by the “Lastsleep (1944-1946) EP,” and I can specifically remember a moment in the mountains a few years ago during the rain where “To Caves” completely enhanced the overcast scene. And, to my disdain, I once remember seeing a Facebook message from @SilentGarrett (way late - like, the next day) a couple years ago when I lived in Phoenix, asking me if I needed a ride to a local show of theirs... only to find out I couldn’t have gone anyway!
These guys are kind, incredibly talented individuals, and the songwriting and overall aesthetic of the band brings forth strong creative energy in me. I’m so stoked for these guys, and al that they’re doing. ⚡️

we will never come to the entire understanding of how Christ continues to work in us. but what we can hold onto is the hope that despite the darkness around us - both near and far- He is working past our blind states which are distracted by life. He is moving though we often do not feel it. focus everything on Christ.
Onward with the “inspired by” series...
Throughout my childhood, all the way until now, I’ve loved the @StarWars universe. When I was younger, I immersed myself in the films, in video games, in lore books and spin-off novels. Even now, I revisit those old games from time to time, and still feel those goosebumps when watching the movies. I’m thankful for that galaxy “far, far away...” for being such a source of inspiration in my early years, even on to now.
May the Force be with you all. ✨
