This curious clay portrait figure represents Thomas Todd, a London tea dealer and druggist, circa 1770.
It is thought to be the work of Chitqua, the first Chinese artist to work in England. Chitqua was in London between 1769 and 1772 and lodged with a Mr. Marr in Norfolk Street near the Strand. During his stay in England Chitqua was presented to King George III and Queen Charlotte and met Josiah Wedgwood. #london#museumoflondon#chitqua#18thcentury#wedgwood#thomastodd#antique
#OnThisDay : Judith wrote to her parents describing her experience meeting George Washington and his family when John Murray was invited to have an audience with him and present his Universalist teachings. Judith reported that he spoke fondly of her brother Winthrop, one of his aides-de-camp, and pictured here purposefully resembling Washington in a portrait
"My eyes had never beheld him - but it was not necessary that it should be announced - that dignified benignity could belong to no other. Mrs Washington introduced me (...) and a smile of pleasure illumined the features of the President, he requested me to be seated, and taking his place by my side, proceeded with peculiar affability to question me relative to my health, my brother, Philadelphia, etc etc"
It may be difficult for many people to associate the name Donatien de Sade with a romantic love story; but this singular libertine was able to fall in love: According to his contemporaries (and his own mother-in-law), he had a charm and beauty that left the ladies in pledges. In this jewel, a letter that he wrote to the young actress Mlle. Colet, declares to be "madly in love" with her, who ends up being his mistress. It is probable that it was not an authentic love, rather it seems a sort of "Seeking Arrangement" of the XVIII century 😂. Anyway, it's a very romantic and sweet letter coming from a character like the Marquis. 💖 Through the adventures with his lovers we can appreciate other facets of Donatien, it will be interesting to discover more similar letters. 😉 ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

The Greywater sisters + little Sally O’Sullivan, another poor Padrician same as them that came to the New World hoping for a better life. Lydia (the eldest) gave Sally her handkerchief on the first night to try and clean some of the soot off her face, and since then she became somewhat adopted into the family 😂 Thanks to Desany (@sirenvoyager) for the rad pic.
