This is the story of a little map maker turned mapping empire... in 1976 David DeLorme began creating and selling maps of Maine out of his car. He created maps inspired by his love of fishing and his frustration of the crappy backcountry maps available at the time. His main focus was creating maps that showed backcountry access (likes trails and logging roads). Over the years DeLorme expanded from Maine to New England to the U.S. and even world wide. DeLorme was one of the first companies to digitize maps, first offering them on CD-ROM then moving into GPS and eventually established the In-Reach global SOS and communication system. In 2016 DeLorme was purchased by Garmin. •••••• Here Rick and I stand in front of “Eartha” the world’s largest rotating globe located at the old DeLorme headquarters in Yarmouth, Maine. We have no idea whether Climb-On Maps will ever reach the global and business status of DeLorme (I doubt that David DeLorme envisioned such an empire when he was selling maps out of his car), but we are inspired by David’s story - his love of accessing the outdoors, making maps, and sharing it with others so they can have amazing experiences too. That is the beauty of maps. ••••••••••••••
