When I saw this photo I took some time to ask why we ever feel the need to explain ourselves in the first place. Our parents! Yes! That makes total sense. They asked us what we were doing and the reasoning behind it is because, well, chances are you made some questionable choices as a 1,2,3,4-18 year old and they wanted to make sure you were keeping your best interest in mind. This really has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them. They want to make sure they’re being a good parent. Truly, we are always looking out for our personal needs, which is simply human nature! There is no need to blame anyone for anything, it is what it is. Then, we all go to school. School is yet another place where we have to explain ourselves to teachers, peers, principles, and so on. Doesn’t it make sense why we do what we do? #thehumancondition
So why is not explaining yourself easier? From my perspective, it is easier because when you explain yourself to someone, you have to put words to a feeling you have and sometimes that is a challenging task. I often find myself saying, “I don’t know and don’t care to explain, I just feel it!” You are the translator of your feelings. When you stop explaining yourself, you get to say what you want with no reasoning behind it. You don’t have to prepare an answer as to why you are not attending an event. You just get to say no thank you! How easy?! When you stop explaining yourself, what you’re saying is that I feel this way, I know what this feeling inside of me means, and I’m going to choose to listen to that. Period. That’s all! I don’t need your approval or opinion one way or the other, therefore, I don’t need to explain myself. How I interpret my emotions and the actions that follow have nothing to do with you and everything to do with me.
