The story of Just Nuisance: . Just Nuisance was a Great Dane who lived in Simon’s Town, Cape Town. He used to love catching the train that ran along the beach front with sailors who were part of the Royal Navy, which was based there. . Unfortunately, he got in a bit of trouble with the train conductors because he never paid for a ticket! The conductors threatened to put him down because of this. He’d become such a fond friend of the sailors that they wrote many letters to the navy to see if they could help. . Those enlisted in the navy were entitled to travel free on the trains so it was decided that Just Nuisance would become the first dog to ever be enlisted in the Royal Navy (25 August 1939)! . He was called “Just Nuisance” because his favourite spot to lie in used to be right in the way of all the sailors (at the top of the gangplank) trying to board the ships. . He had a great life with the navy and even got promoted from “Ordinary Seaman” to “Able Seaman”. The navy organised him a “wedding” to Adinda (another Great Dane) which resulted in 5 pups and helped to raise money for the war effort. . He was not always the “goodest” boy and did get in trouble a few times with the navy - one time because he was found “sleeping in an improper place” on the bed of one of the Petty Officers!! . Just Nuisance was discharged from the navy on January 1 1944 due to thrombosis causing paralysis after a car accident. . His statue can be found at the harbour in Simon’s Town, right near the naval base.
