God sent me an important message recently. 🌟

I was supposed to run alongside my husband for the Philadelphia Half Marathon. The evening before, while lifting a cumbersome box, I “threw out my back,” injuring a bulging disc in my lumbar vertebrae. Afterward, I couldn’t stand up straight without excruciating pain, and walking felt near-impossible.

The next morning, my husband @randymichaelfitness left for the race at 5:30am, reassuring me that it was fine if I didn’t make it over to watch or join at the finish. Despite that, I was determined to be a good, supportive wife, so I hobbled with Lily to the train station and road into the city.

I was sure I’d be in pain all day long, and initially, it felt like standing & walking made it worse. BUT, about halfway through the 2 mile walk from the train station to the finish line, my pain started going away, and my back was getting straighter. I even jogged the last bit (out of fear that I’d miss him finishing!), and I felt much better than I had that morning.

I reflected on the situation: initially, I was angry that I was injured and could not participate. I then thought that doing nothing would be the easiest. Little did I know that doing the one thing I thought would feel the worst actually helped the most. And, I only did it because I felt God calling me to; to be a Godly wife.

The lesson I learned: following God’s calling may not always be what I think is best, it’s not always what I would have planned. His wisdom is far greater than mine. His plans for me are far greater than mine. Following His Word always leads to the best outcomes, even when I don’t see them coming.

@tco_field @himynameismarlon @rdostaly @fitnezz4life @zhazel101 @emsashaj @dpd201498 Danielle, Justin, David (Philly BMR), Sean (Detroit BMR), Pett, Daniel, Maylin, Chantay and Lauren THANK YOU for support before, during and after the race. I could not have finished this marathon without ur on course support in words and deeds. Especially the last 4 miles. (If I missed someone, please tag them in this post..)

As for the race, it was very well organized. They had a huge warming tent for runners. It was 35° at the start of the race. I ran the 8K Saturday and the Full Marathon Sunday. The crowd support was outstanding. Especially for the Full. The course was picturesque and well laid out. There were areas where the course had steep banks to the right. (No Bueno)

I registered for the Independence Challenge. Which made me eligible for the third medal (huge).

I enjoyed the race weekend. I enjoyed PHL. I enjoyed laughing and chilling with old and new friends. I was disappointed with my time. I had severe cramps in my IT Bands, quads and hamstrings. They were debilitating. I hadn’t run much the 3 weeks prior due to a calf strain. Oddly enough I had no calf issues.

I am going to take a break from training until after my @runthesol trip to Barbados. I am registered for the 2019 Houston Full Marathon. I will make this my goal race for 2019. @emsashaj thank you for this recommendation. I have learn a lot from this race. I hope to apply those learnings to Houston.
*
In conclusion, I would recommend this race. For those of you on the East Coast, PHL is so easy to get to by plane, train or automobile. So you should put it in your race calendar for next year.

With Thanksgiving upon us, I’m grateful for the chance to get to know this AMAZING guy, Gene Dykes! @genewdykes He’s one of my running heroes, and graciously invited me to stay with him this weekend. Gene’s a WR holder in the marathon running 2:57 last year, and 2:55 a few weeks ago in Toronto at age 70!!!! 🏃🏻‍♂️💨🏃🏻‍♂️💨 Fun fact; we both won our Age Groups in the @philly_marathon 1/2 Marathon this weekend. And one of us broke the AR by over 2:30 minutes!!!(it wasn’t me😜) A little of his magic must’ve rubbed off as I managed an age 50’s PR. 🙏😇 Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family Gene, keep on INSPIRING!! #genedykes #wannabelikeGene #philadelphiamarathon #bostonbuddies #centralparktc #renegadesww #fasterasamaster #dreambig #teamzensah #withoutlimitz #runtheday #runtoinspire #strydrunning #polarvantagev #runningmotivation #runplanet #runnersworld #cloud259 #roguerunning #instarunners #runnersofinstagram #runrunrun #marathontraining #wmmajors #wherechampionsrun
