You will now witness something you might have thought unlikely... An Englishman leaping to the defence of the French... no really.
And with some historical facts of which most Americans seem to be unaware, no really again.
Trump has responded unsurprisingly to President Macron’s weekend speech in which Macron rightly denounced nationalism.
Today the historical knowledge challenged idiot in the White House has suggested that Parisians were learning to speak German until the nice Americans rode to the rescue in World War Two.
Okay the historical jnaccuracy... and it's a fallacy that has been tossed in my direction too - that Americans rescued Europe from Nazism.
Let us look at the facts shall we... D-Day the Allied invasion of Normandy where the Allies rode to liberate France was not, despite Hollywoods best efforts, an American effort... It was an ALLIED effort (the clue is in the name Allies). Of the 23 infantry divisions involved in Operation Overlord, it's true the single largest contribution was American - 13 divisions, but there were also 8 British and 2 Canadian. Of the armoured divisions 5 were American, 4 British 1 Canadian, 1 French and 1 Polish. Of the airborn divisions 2 were American and 2 British... Of the fleet that delivered all these divisions... well that was almost entirely British.
Worse is that Trump’s tweet displays something I've come across before a remarkable level of bloody ingratitude on behalf of Americans. Now this is a fact... without French assistance the colonists revolution would have failed. This is a fact, Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown not because of American arms but because he could not evacuate down the coast using the Royal Navy because he was cut off by the French Navy. Accordingly the French gave the Americans a nice big statue that Trump must be able to see from his New York apartment... The Statue of Liberty to commemorate the anniversary of American independence.
So without the French the United States of America would not exist as we know it today.
If I were Mr Macron I would ask for the statue back... Or send that idiot in Washington a history book.
