This weekend, Laura and I, along with my parents, warped up to Birmingham and the DESTINATION STAR TREK convention at the National Exhibition Centre for three days of autograph signings, prop/costume exhibits, unique set photo shoots, rare-merchandise stalls and special Q&A panels on stage, all celebrating the sci-fi franchise that is our favourite show!

After attending an opening ceremony hosted by actors and guests from across the 52 years of Trek, the Friday afterparty at the Hilton Hotel was a fun (and intoxicatingly expensive) experience, where I was interviewed on camera by two groups about my fan series Star Trek: Unity. At this Trek convention, more than any previously, I felt there was a really positive, family-feel to the community - we got talking and debating with loads of fellow fans and genuine enthusiasm of the new Star Trek Discovery cast was palpable, not least from the charming Jason Isaacs (Captain Lorca) who gave a great talk on his career and how invested the crew are in the production. Whether you love or hate DISCO, it is a series with a progressive and inclusive ethos that has brought fresh and younger viewers into the Star Trek fandom; we saw many of them in amazing costumes and make-up meeting their heroes and enjoying hanging out together. Laura and I chatted to the beautiful Mary Chieffo (L'Rell), with whom we discussed her Klingon character and parallels with Michael Burnham (as well as sparkly hair and skin gel!) while the lovely Jayne Brook (Admiral Cornwell) was an absolute pleasure to speak to about the authority her character brought to the show.

Two of my best friends, Nay and Tess also joined us on the Saturday having recently become huge fans of The Next Generation, getting an autographed action figure from Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher) and a fist-bump from Marina Sirtis (Counsellor Troi). Laura got a photo with her Captain, William Shatner, who also entertained us with stories during his panel, my Dad was inspired listening to NASA astronaut Fred Haise's presentation to get an autograph and we were lucky enough to meet several other actors. We all had a wonderful weekend geeking out with our Star Trek family! LLAP🖖🏻
