January 08, 2018. Day 6. Crater Camp (5,790 mamsl) - Uhuru Peak (5,895 mamsl) - Millenium Camp (3,820 mamsl). It almost took me a year to get to this post, but it was definitely a good day to remember the summit and celebrate international mountain day! We could barely sleep the night before. It was very, very cold, and we had a hard time breathing. It was hard to keep warm. So by 4:30 am we were ready to get out of our tent. Our feet were cold and our boots felt frozen, which meant that our first few steps were hard. We had a short climb left to get to the summit, and little by little we were getting closer. Simon, one of our guides, starting singing the Kilimanjaro song on our way up which gave us the extra strength and motivation we needed to finally reach the top. Now, we had only about 200 meters left of almost flat ground to get to the official summit. We were finally there after all that dreaming and planning. I felt like crying... and I did! We got to the summit right during sunrise and it was there were we met all of the other climbers doing the mountain on the more traditional routes. Until then, we had had the mountain almost to ourselves. After a few moments on the summit, it was time to go down. We were going down on Mweka Route, which is exclusively used to get down the mountain, spending the night at Millenium Camp and getting off the mountain the next day. By now, we had officially fallen in love with the mountain and its people. #luispeyxime #africa #tanzania #kilimanjaro #umbweroute #volcano #mountainadventures #hikingadventures #mountaineering #sevensummits #7summits #mountains
