Margarethenhöhe is a planned community just outside of Essen, built as Germany’s first “Garden City” in 1910. It was planned and designed by Margarethe Krupp, widow of the industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Most of what we could find to read on it had to be translated from German, but it seems like it was built somewhat as a vanity project, somewhat to provide more housing to workers at the Krupp company. Either way, it’s a beautiful neighborhood to walk around, built around a central square with a convenient tram line to other parts of the city. We also got our first hint of sun in nearly a week
