It’s felt so long since I’ve been in New England woods near peak leaf color. The late afternoon lighting and the way it backlights all the trees is just so striking and amazing. I wish I had brought my paints. I get the spiritual power of stained glass cathedral lighting, it’s really easy to feel in awe at the whole of creation.
I found this female Harlequin darner and her mate drowning in a pool along the boardwalk in The Nature Conservancy’s Manchester Cedar Swamp in Manchester, NH. The female looked ok after the ordeal; the male, still attached by its copulatory organ at the base of the abdomen, didn’t appear to be so lucky. I left them to their chances on the trunk of an Atlantic White Cedar.
