📍This one was playing tricks w her owners. She knows how to walk on a loose leash just fine. Even better is how much she now enjoys it

Vid 1 you can see Copper (tan dog) playing w one of his buddies Max (who has a cool rescue story of his own). Originally Copper came to one of my seminars primarily because he was not good w other dogs
.
📍Vid 2 Today @kodak_kaycee_ and Copper work w us here at #dctk9 and Copper is learning to take on a more advanced #helperdog role. A roll where he is now allowed to assist us in correcting dogs where appropriate. Teaching him to do so also requires us to advocate and make sure not to put him in situations that set him up to fail (esp when part of his original training taught him to avoid confrontation). As #doghandlers and #dogtrainers we are responsible for our helperdogs and keeping them safe if they are willing to trust us putting them in Such a vulnerable position with a dog like this. One of the things that we setup first is the state of mind of the dog that we are training. We worked to get the dog to a point where it could approach other dogs more appropriately (utilizing a helper dog is not about just letting them do the work by putting them In a room with the dog and hoping for the best). You can see our helper dog Copper doing a great job of offering the state of mind and energy level that Kayla the #gsd needs to thrive (too much excitement of play would not be ideal for her right now). So in a way both of these dogs are helping one another .
.
📍This brings us to the third video where we allow Kayla to act a bit more energetic (making her more proned to making more mistakes that require correction). This is where Copper learns to offer help bc he is pressured a bit more to do so. During this period dogs like Copper do so reluctantly bc they know it must be done (but are nervous of breaking the rules that we have created). This is a process that Copper will be less nervous about w more practice (now that he is capable of doing so appropriately). A job that he wants to help w but is nervous do to this in many ways since it is so new to him
. 📍Our 4th vid shows more experienced helper dog Soco w Kayla w o our help followed by the 5th showing him helping with our help. Which highlights how far Kayla has come as well! #dogsofdctk9 #dogtraining

Most people do not know this about their dogs! 😳😳😳😳

📍When #dogs drink they actually curl their tongues backwards into the shape of a scoop/spoon in order to pull water into their mouths

A really important stage in the socialization process is the beginning. In reality it’s actually far from the beginning. That’s because there is so much that goes into training prior to this point. Certain rules if you will. For example... How we expect the dog to respond to our use of the leash, how we focus on early fundamentals in order to acquire a certain state of mind before inserting her into a room filled with dogs like this...and of course a handler that is capable of speaking clearly with their body, leash, verbal and in this case stockyard whip. Here the goal is not to threaten her with it but actually help her to realize that even around other dogs we still can provide her the space needed and keep other dogs away if necessary. That alone can be huge in helping a dog to begin practicing behaving differently around dogs
.
.
📍The truth is that man dogs that act aggressively do so because it works. It helps to give them space or on some cases gets another dog/human to stop doing what they were at the moment. Once we make it clear that certain behaviors are not clear, and teach a dog what is preferred, we then need to practice managing them in a way that allows them to slowly adopt these new habits in order for them to begin making better choices with less and less of our help. Super proud of Coriandur here as she begins to loosen up and just exist in movement around other dogs in free movement
.
.
📍Here the stockyard whip is used as an extension of our arm that serves as a bubble/barrier to help herd dogs in different directions. Once a dog like Cor sees that we can control the room, it helps her to loosen up and not be so on edge (bc most of the time Day cares and dog parks are pretty much a free for all with no rules to help dogs like @coriandur learn to become social. This is just the beginning

Let me start out by saying that we are super proud of both Arnold and Lando. Lando was a dog (black and gray dog) that originally came to us for some pretty gnarly dog and human aggression issues. He’s pretty much a regular with us these days and has fit in to the routine so well, that we use him to help us with other dogs. Here you can see him helping to get Arnold to play (a dog that is also with us for gnarly dog and human aggression issues (stemming from some major anxiety and structural issues)
.
.
📍So we have one dog that was once in the same shoes, helping another who is currently in those shoes now
.
.
📍The next thing that I want to point out is how we not only have Arnold playing but, make sure that we are relevant enough in the relationship to be able to give him direction and even recall him off/out of it. In the first video it looks pretty sharp. But how did we get there? Now to be fair there is much more that goes Into it but, one of the most important pieces to that puzzle is our ability to be able to follow through
.
.
📍In the second video (Swipe left) you can see the use of leash, remote and food. The way that we teach #leashpressure communication allows us to transfer that language to the remote, which helps to get us one step closer to hands free. The food is there to reinforce and the verbal markers are also very much apart of the dog understanding why they are getting that marker (which gets them fed in early stages)

📍I think it’s pretty cool and think that it’s even cooler to know that every dog can listen and learn to take direction from you around distractions. It all starts with clear communication. This is what we teach

Yusef and @kodak_kaycee_ getting some of the gang settled and ready to head out for a potty walk. People tend to overlook the value of threshold work and how it can help to reinforce polite behavior if done properly. It is sort of like a continuation or teaching time and place, on and off (mentally)
.
.
📍Socialization is much more than just dogs that play together...it’s also teaching hen how to coexist and NOT play. Sometimes that’s more important than the play itself. Teaching them to do so and being able to ask them to do so, in order to leash them or give them further direction is crucial
.

📍Don’t overlook the value of teaching your dog patience and impulse control

Lucky is learning to view life differently. Understanding. When to be goofy and that there’s a time and place for certain behavior is very important. He’s taking direction soooo much better and as a result is able to partake and be included in scenarios where he previously would have struggled
.
.
📍Context is so important for dogs and owners to understand. Most behaviors that ppl initially struggle with are behaviors hat aren’t bad or inappropriate but, are just inappropriate contextually
.
.
📍Playing playing tag with your friend isn’t wrong or bad but, doing so in the middle of a business meeting, or in church, etc. is. Many dogs innocently resort to behaviors that are allowed by us but, do so at the wrong times. If we as #doghandlers #dogowners aren’t prepared to interrupt/disagree/correct/stop one behavior and then direct to a more appropriate one, then we are setting our dogs and ourselves up for issues later down the road (in everyday real world situations). More importantly, if you are not prepared with clear communication that allows you to leave an imprint that suggest “don’t do this again”, your follow through to suggest another behavior will likely be seen as a reward that follows for the previous inappropriate behavior
.
.
📍Understanding how to disagree, along with when to redirect the dog to suggest a diff behavior, how to mark with good timing and how to separate the alternative behavior from the one before it, can make all the difference in how your dog interprets that experience
.
.
📍There’s a lot that goes into the human-dog relationship and this is what we focus or attention on when looking to improve the relationship between owners and their #dogs. This was an innocent missing link for lucky and his owner and we can’t wait to get them reunited so that we can begin strengthening the relationship that they already have in a more productive way
