I’m at a library conference and today some colleagues and I took some time to visit the Center for Civil and Human Rights. I can’t even begin to put into words the profound nature of the experience but 2 exhibits stood out strongly and I’m going to try. 1) when you sit at this counter you wear headphones that loudly play screams and taunts as your chair rattles from being “kicked”. The idea is to see how long you can sit and handle the abuse. 2) the voices of little girls singing plays all around you while you look at a floor of rubble and the stained glass images of the 4 sweet babies who died in the bombing of the 16th street Baptist Church. The center excels at breeding empathy and even heartache. Everyone needs to go. Tissues are generously provided.
