I will probably, almost definitely, 100% never teach this in a class. There are lot of joints that are at risk. I do it to challenge myself, see what my body can do and see what may not be working as it should in the body. I know my body quite well, so know how to push it pretty safely, but if I injure myself it’s my own fault. If ‘I’ injure a student in class that is a combination of faults including mine. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀
⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s why when I teach I air quite heavily on the side of caution. I like to make it more about a discovery of self, how the body moves presently and other more efficient ways of moving. There are a lot of Yoga poses I don’t teach because I don’t believe they’re suitable for the majority of people, or actually good for the body. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

I want to get a whole lot deeper into this, which is why I’ve just signed up for the 6 month course by @justinwolferyoga of @riseyogamovement. ⠀

His stuff is truly amazing, combining various movement teachings from people like @portal.ido & @functionalrangeconditioning, to apply safely to Yoga and drive this discovery forward. Not only discovering, but fully utilising that knowledge to be able to safely develop new ‘skills’ as it were. ⠀

I literally cannot wait to get started, for my own practice and to share with others. I know this will be the Yoga I really believe in teaching and helping people with. ———————————————————

CONSTRUCTIVE REST POSITION

I tell people in class that being in this position for 15 minutes a day will do them more good than an hour of Yoga or Pilates once a week. And I honestly think it’s true. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀ ⠀
It gives a chance for the muscles that run over the front of the hips- the hip flexor muscles- to switch off. These muscles are a store of tension and suffer due to sitting for extended periods. Play around with the foot positioning until you find somewhere the legs can rest still without any muscle activation. You’ll know it when you feel it. This then helps the pelvis to ‘reset’ to neutral, which then helps the lower back release. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

You are then lying down to be able to scan the body for any other areas of tension and release them one by one. You really get a chance to feel into the body which can even end up being an emotional release. ⠀

The reason I’m looking into habits so much is because I want to discover the easiest ways to incorporate these things into daily life. Nobody I say to does it for 15 minutes a day but there are ways to make it easier. Start with lying in this position for 1 minute when you’ve woken up. It’ll get you into the routine of being in this position and you can easily wake up 1 minute earlier if your schedule’s ‘too busy’. Rearrange your furniture so you could watch your regular TV (if that’s what you do) from this position on the floor. Reading in bed is another perfect opportunity. Why am I posting a picture of a plug you ask? I’ve been researching and exploring habits in order to help people get into better movement habits. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This plug has nothing to do with any movement habits but is a way to stop a bad habit of mine- being on the internet all hours of the day. So my router is now plugged into this, meaning I have no internet from 10pm. 8pm was a little too scary, but little steps. This makes it a lot easier to break a bad habit. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

I’m sure it’s been done before but this exercise popped into my brain today. In Pilates we focus shoulder bridges on the centre- so mainly glutes (bum) and TvA (deep lying corset muscle underneath your abs)- and try to not use the hamstrings much. Well my hamstrings are pretty weak so this variation adds them (heavily) into the mix. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

⠀⠀is to stop the pelvis
⠀⠀from tilting away
⠀⠀from you. This relies
⠀⠀on engaging the TvA
⠀⠀to maintain the

My first attempt definitely saw my pelvis tilting away which risks causing lower back pain. Second time round (this video) I focused only on the pelvis and kept it under greater control. It’s not perfect, but it’s better. ⠀

As well as stopping the pelvis tilting front to back, we’ve got instability side to side. So again the TvA helps stabilise this, along with even pressure in the feet from the glutes and hamstrings. ⠀

I would suggest to only try this if you have a pretty strong practice already, and good body awareness. For most people downward dog is far from a restorative pose. @sundrayoga said about tying a belt/strap to a wall and trying a restorative down dog. I’m lucky enough to have @trxtraining straps so modified her idea to this!
