Whitby Abbey founded in 657 AD. In 664 the Synod of Whitby took place at the monastery Which calculated and established the dates for Easter we still use today. The first Abbey was destroyed by Vikings in 870 AD. Reinfrid, a soldier of William the Conqueror, became a monk and established a new monastery after 1066. It was destroyed by Henry VIII in 1540 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Whitby Abbey was made famous in fiction by Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula, as Dracula climbed the 199 steps from the shore to the Abbey (note: I did not climb the 199 steps). The ruined Abbey was beautiful and haunting sitting on the cliffs overlooking the North Sea..
