This time of the year can be a busy one when it comes to shoveling... and that's good? Sure! Shoveling can be a great way to add a certain amount of cardio and even resistance training (depending on how deep and heavy the snow is). However, use precaution, especially if you are just getting back into fitness. First, make sure to layer up. As you heat up, you may want to take a layer off so you don't overheat. Second, make sure to use good form. Lift with the knees and not the lower back. We also like to switch off sides or arms we are using as the "main worker or arm" to give each side some rest and the other some work. Finally, don't feel bad about taking water breaks. This allows you to keep the heart rate down and believe it or not, you can still get dehydrated out there. This super important if you have hypertension! One last tip, keep those breathing patterns calm and controlled. Happy shoveling. 📸: @erikmarthaler .

I'd like to add on and just say that if you have hypertension, there's an increased chance of having a cardiac event while shoveling. This time of year it is common!! SUPER important to take multiple breaks and take your time with it. Also, making sure you're using proper breathing technique and not holding your breathe.
